Runtime Menu System

The Orion runtime menu system provides a familiar, easy to use interface while reducing screen "clutter" by eliminating extra buttons required for navigation. Each series of interface screens will have their own series of menus specifically focused on the tasks for the specific screen.

Shown below at the "top" level menu when Orion runtime first loads.

Data Logging & Historical View Data Files: Menu System

The "Data" menu from Orion's main menu provides access to Orion's Data Logging section. The System Logger provides access to Open & View existing historical files, delete historical files, to select points for Logging and to manually start or stop Logging.

Select Points for Data Logging

The Select points for logging screen allows the user to select any point(s) from the system for data logging. "Select All" and "Clear All" buttons provide a quick way to select or deselect all points in the system. Use the checkbox to enable/disable a point for logging. When completed press the "Accept" key to write the point selection to memory. This is important so the Orion system saves the settings for power-up operation. New settings will not take effect until the "Accept" button is pressed.

Check the Auto Log on Start up to automatically start a data log file on system power up.

Data Logging: Start, Stop & File Naming

Orion will log data to it's internal CF card for a period of 1 year (for 15 controllers or less attached to the link) or more.  Current data for each controller is written to the log at a fixed interval based on the setting entered in the "Days before new file is started" field (1440 readings max per file).  A new file will be generated automatically when the file time frame is completed.  "Data log to disk rates" are determined by the total length of the file entered by the user.  "Data log to disk" rates are equal in minutes to the number of days value entered, before a new file is started.  1 day = data log to disk at one minute intervals. 31 days = data log rates to disk at 31 minutes intervals.

The main system data logging screen is used to start or stop the logger and also add a file prefix to the file name.  File names are automatically generated using m_d_y_h_m_s format (file prefix is entered before the date/time stamp if the user enters one).

The main logging screen will display the current data file name if system logging is enabled as well as the currently loaded file name (on the bottom status bar), if a historical file is loaded. To start the log, press the "Logging On" button (controller variables must be assigned first by selecting the "Select Points For Logging" menu item).

Prior to data logging controller variables must be assigned first by selecting the "Select Points For Logging" menu item.

To manaully start data logging, press the "Logging On" button.

Auto Log on Power Up, check the Auto Log on Start up button in the "Select Points for Logging" menu item.

Any time logging is enabled, the "Logging On" button will be green.

Historical Data View: Historical Plot Time Setup

The History Plot Setup allows the user to select any time frame (zoom in/out) to view historical data.  A historical data file must be loaded (using the Edit\Open History File menu item) before data can be plotted.

The History Plot Setup screen displays the start and end time for the currently loaded file in hours and minutes (date/time in AM/PM).  Use the vertical sliders for "File Start" and "File End" to select the desired time for history plot viewing.

The system will not allow a user to select an end time that is less than the start time.  Minimum time for plotting is one minute.  This window is also used to select the time frame for viewing for total and average reports.

Historical Data View: Plot Channel Setup

The History Plot Channel Setup allows the user to plot up to 8 channels simultaneously. Any point from the data file can be selected along with the color for each channel to be plotted. Use the drop down boxes to select a channel for the plot and the color for the channel. Press "Add Point" button to add the point to the current list of historical plot channels. The "Clear All" button will clear the list of all points so a new group can be added for plotting.

Historical Data View: Plot Historical Data

The "Plot Historical Data" screen plots the data from the currently opened history file.  If a file has not been opened or data points have not been assigned to a plot, Orion will alert the user to correct the problem.

X and Y axis scales are set to "auto-scale" based on current values for each plot so no user interface is required.  Dragging across the trend provides real time "zoom in" capability with multiple zooms.  After zooming, clicking on the X or Y-axis will display a menu to zoom back to normal or zoom out one level at a time.  Trend labels are supplied for all plots to identify channels to the color plotted on the trend.

The "cursor" Icon (small trend icon with vertical bars) displays a vertical data cursor that can be dragged (from the bottom of the cursor) from left to right in the trend area.  When this vertical cursor is dragged, the trend labels at the top of the screen change to the actual values that correspond to the point the vertical cursor line is positioned.  This feature makes it very easy to "zero in" on any actual value within the trend plot. Press the "cursor" icon again will make the trend cursor disappear.  The icon acts as a "toggle" button to show/hide the data cursor.

Historical Data View: View Averages Report

The "View Average Report" provides a text report that displays the average value over time for each channel selected in the "History Plot Channel Setup" screen. Averages are calculated for the period of time selected in the "History Plot Time Setup" screen. This report supplies the average value for each channel over time as well as the combined average for all channels selected.

Historical Data View: View Totals Report

View Totals Report provides a text report that displays the totaled value over time from one or Orion's "Running Total" channels. When flow totalizers are enabled in the Orion configurator, channels are automatically added to the system for running, daily, weekly and monthly totals. The totals report operates only on the "Running Total" channel by calculating total between two time values. This report is used to generate flow period reports or "shift" total reports. This report will not operate properly on channels other than the "Running Total" channel that is selected in the "History Plot Channel Setup" screen.

Historical Data - File Structure [.csv]

Orion stores historical data on the "I-Stick" USB memory device in .csv file format. As described above these files may be viewed directly with Orion Data Views. This data can also be viewed on a Windows® desk or laptop computer.

Microsoft Excel®: The .csv data files on the "I-Stick" USB memory device may be opened with Excel® and the data printed, sorted, inserted into a graph, etc.

DataView Software: Orion's DataView software is Free. DataView can open .csv files providing a similar view as Excel®. DataView provides an easy manner to graph the data, save graphs as jpeg files, etc. Click here to link to DataView page.
